Mohammad Amir released from prison

LONDON: Fast bowler Muhammad Amir has been released from prison in England, where he was serving a six-month sentence for spot-fixing. Once considered cricket’s most promising star, 19-year-old Amir was found guilty in the scandal that shook the cricketing world in May 2010. Amir, along with then skipper of Pakistan’s test team Salman Butt and fellow fast bowler Muhammad Asif, had taken bribes from bookie Mazhar Majeed for bowling no-balls in a test match with Australia. Undercover reporters from now defunct British publication News Of The World secretly videotaped Majeed during transaction. In November 2011, Amir, Asif and Butt were found guilty by a London court. LONDON: Ex-Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson did his old club a huge favour by scoring the winner for Everton in a 1-0 victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City, while United moved level on points at the top after beating Stoke City 2-0. Ireland midfielder Gibson left United to move to Goodison Park earlier this month and his fierce strike on the hour, which took a slight deflection, proved decisive. United, who trail their rivals on goal difference, eased past Stoke thanks to two penalties at Old Trafford from Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov.
